There is a lot to celebrate during the month of June - Father’s Day, Flag Day, the first day of summer to name a few. June is also National Safety Month and we are excited to offer some ways for you to share safety tips with your patients during office visits. 

Safety is all about intentional awareness and continuous improvement. National Safety Month originated through the 25 years ago in an effort to observe and adopt ways to help keep each other safe through the prevention of accidents and injuries.

The Importance of Reading Medicine Labels 

When thinking about ways to improve safety for the general population, promoting allergen awareness is one way to move the needle in the right direction. Do you discuss with caregivers the importance of reading labels for over-the-counter medications? 

A study by shows clinical reports of adverse reactions triggered by  to be on the rise. While inactive ingredients are added to most oral medications to improve taste, appearance, absorption, or shelf life, they may be causing more harm than good. 

Some are allergens that can cause adverse events when taken. The study also found that on average, 75 percent of oral solid dosage medicines are made up of inactive ingredients, and 92.3% contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic or adverse reactions. These ingredients include chemical dyes, common allergens like gluten and lactose, and hard-to-digest sugars, which can cause allergic reactions like stomach pain or bloating.
